Mataburro, Mura Mura 2024
Mataburro’s story began when former sommelier Laurent Roger, together with his partner Mélissa Ingrand, took over his family’s vineyards in Rivesaltes in Roussillon, France. The three hectares are managed organically with influences from both the clay-limestone geology and coastal Mediterranean climate. The wines consist of typical French/Spanish border varietals such as Muscat, Grenache, Syrah and Merlot, with the oldest Grenache vines planted by Laurent’s grandfather in 1949. Inspired by Mélissa's Southern Australian heritage, Mura Mura (or Mooramoora) refers to the Diyari people's ancestral spirits from the Dreamtime who shaped the landscape. The 2024 vintage is a blend of Merlot, Mourvèdre and Muscat, each undergoing a short maceration of 12 hours before direct-pressing. Spontaneous fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks before bottling with zero sulphites. Nose of black tea, rosewater and grenadine only amplifies this deeply complex and structured, yet super-drinking rosé. Juicy and energetic flavours of wild strawberry, watermelon and pomegranate are undercut by herbaceous notes of rosemary and cinchona bark. Mura Mura 2023 would pair well with salade niçoise.
