Koppitsch, Perspektive Rot 2021
This family-run estate has been producing wine for generations, city records even show that the name 'Koppitsch' has been associated with winemaking in Neusiedl as far back as 1523. Maria and Alex have been stewards of these vines since 2011 when they shifted vinifaction practices to biodynamic. Spread over 6.3 hectares the grapes grow from a variety of fluvial sediments laid down by past flows of the River Danube. Wines undergo zero filtering or fining and are predominantly aged in old oak barrels once used by Alex's grandfather. Perspektive Rot 21 is made up of 70% Blaufränkisch and 30% St. Laurent from limestone plots at an altitude of 260 metres above sea level. Almost all grapes are destemmed, with approximately 10% stems in the mash, and are spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. After pressing, the wine is transferred to 225L used barriques and aged for 22 months on gross lees. Initial very green nose of padron peppers and blackcurrant leaf flow into bonfire smoke with dark flavours of kirsch cherries and burnt cassis. Koppitsch - Perspektive Rot 21 would pair well with grilled lamb koftas.
